Midday on Mayreau

We first visited Mayreau, an island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in the late 90's or early 00's. We anchored at Salt Whistle Bay, home of a resort by the same name. It's a beautiful harbor, and a popular stopping point for yachts headed to or from the Tobago Cays. We'd heard of the legendary drinks at Dennis' Hideaway on the other side of the island, and made the trek up the steep dirt trail to the Saline Bay side of Mayreau to sample them ourselves.

Doyle's guide insisted we try the Margarita, which some of us obliged. But, it was the Pina Colada, made with Bennett Opie's Cream of Coconut that stole the show. We spent the rest of the voyage searching for ingredients to make our own on the boat.

We returned to Mayreau a few years later, and not a lot had changed, except the steep dirt trail is now a steep concrete road. We walked over the top to Dennis' again. The shot above is from the 'town' side of the island. Something about those four little feet caught my eye.

Interested in Rum, then you must go to the Ministry of Rum . Maybe someday we'll get around to telling you about our first 'ti punch on Martinique, or doing shots with Seddy on Jost Van Dyke.

Everything in moderation, except moderation.

magic in the islands

We've been sailing in the Caribbean for a number of years, but had never gotten to the BVIs until this past summer. Better late than never.
Some friends of ours wanted to renew their vows on their favorite beach at White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Ok, sounded like fun. It was. A good time...a very good time...was had by all. In the photo above, Seddy Callwood, with wife Raquel looking on, performs a bit of string magic.
Seddy's One Love is just about the perfect beach bar and grill. Amiable hosts, cold drinks, good food, beautiful island.
I expect we'll be back.
Seddy and Raquel have lots of fans. Here's a site with more information, and pictures.

Typical Landing on St Barts

A friend and neighbor of mine recently visited this site to check out the rain video. While here, he saw the St. Bart's photo and mentioned that he had flown into the airport on the island. It seems the authorities won't let you land until you've demonstrated your flying abilities on a check-out flight. Having watched the planes land there, I can understand why. My hat's off to you, Frank (and actually, I'm holding it to keep it from being knocked off by the planes overhead!)

Rain, Finally

No secret to anyone, Georgia has been in the midst of a drought. Lake Lanier, the major water source for Atlanta, has been nearing a record low. Here's a recent photo of the creek behind our house.

We've been catching the last bits of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Fay, and as I write, we've had around 8 inches of rain in the last couple of days. Here's the creek now...

And, it's still raining.

Fishing on St. Barts

St. Barts-One of our favorite places to sail. You'll find mega-yachts and mini-boats (like ours) in the harbor at Gustavia. We're fond of the Champagne and patisseries. People watching is fun, too.

We came upon this young fisherman and his nanny (or perhaps grandmother) early one morning. Didn't seem to be catching anything, to the disappointment of the dog.

(the image has been processed to resemble an old postcard. The fact that I'm telling you this says that I'm not sure it worked)
